Slayed by Sunset: Homelander Vs. Makima - Weapons, Armor and Skills

 Background

Homelander

I'm the Homelander. And I can do whatever the fuck I want.

Be honest: you've imagined a world where superheroes are real. Whether it was a childhood daydream or your own novel, the idea of mundane reality being graced by those truly special can be intoxicating. It's nice to believe that those with great power will exercise it with great responsibility.

But let's be real. If superheroes ever do exist, they won't come to save us from ourselves: that's just their brand's slogan. Their unique abilites won't manifest out of thin air; they'll be produced in a lab as the keys to true power. Buisness and government will swoop in and jockey for supremacy, with so-called heroes just puppets on strings.

"Heroics" will follow contracts and the law (unless it's inconvienent), and they'll always be in service of an executive's agenda. For that reason, no "Supe" can be a true symbol of peace like your favorite comic book. At best, they wanted to be one, only to end up a jaded nihilist going through the motions of starhood. Usually, it'll be a vapid celebrity only in it for fame and fortune, always turning a blind eye to real evil. Sometimes, it's a real piece of shit actively using their power - super and otherwise - for horrific acts, all while the public remains clueless.

Now imagine if the strongest Supe of all was also the most despicable. That's Homelander.

So you know "heroes" aren't born. They're made. But by whom? That would be Vought International. The "Vought" being Frederick Vought, chief physican of Dachau, a Nazi concentration camp. Personally appointed by Adolf Hitler, Vought performed sadistic experiments on thousands of people, usually with a new chemical compound. Naming it "V-One" like the self-centered asshole he was, Vought's formula could dramatically alter DNA. Vought aimed to create an army of super-soldiers under the Third Reich's banner, but as Germany's defeat drew closer, he defected to the United Sates of America. As part of the real-world Operation: Paperclip, the USA would allow Vought to secretly continue his experiments, which had previously killed each-and-every test subject. But eventually, he'd achieve results.

After an initial round of Supes became celeberties secretly in-bed with the government, Vought (now just the company after Frederick went straight to hell) would begin a different approach. V-One became Compound V, exchanging potent effects for cheaper production and (comparative) reliability. Secretly distrubting countless vials to hospitals and lower-class families under the guise of charity, the public would be led to believe that, if lucky, anyone could become a superhero. The masses were left to adore their corporate champions, led by eventual Chief Executive Officer Stan Edgar.

In 1981, Vought would..."acquire" the DNA of their top Supe, Soldier Boy. Paying $2,000 to a homeless women in-exchange for in vito fertilization, a boy was born...who then proceeded to tear out of his mother's womb and kill nearly everyone present. Where most would see an atrocity, Vought saw an even more powerful mascot for them to control. The child - later known as John - would be put through torturous experiments and conditioning, all to find his limits and use them for complete control over their eventual product.

But no amount of advanced science could make these sociopathic rituals understand the human condition. Sure, John was glad to ditch his old name and become Homelander, symbol of The American Dream. But that was a sign of just how badly Vought had failed. All the world's most dangerous man demanded was approval, and he'd spent decades getting it tortured into his sytem that the best way to earn recognition was violence and cruelty. And having been groomed to be humanity's supposed savior, Homelander believed he was above every other being on the planet, most especially non-Supes.

Since debuting in 1999, the Homelander's white meat babyface routine hid a sociopath willing and wanting to exercise his power for fame, adoration, and domination. That included raping Rebecca Butcher and getting her pregnant; Vought assisted in delivering the baby, but forced her to sign an NDA and raise the child in isolation.

For Homelander, it was Tuesday...and the most important day of his life.

Rebecca's husband, Billy Butcher, was the other side of a Supe world's coin. A life of abuse, violent retaliation and guilt had seemingly been behind him, only for his wife to disappear. Gaining CIA connections and forming a small group of those wronged by Vought, The Boys™️would be the first real challenge to Vought's empire. But more than anything else, Butcher wanted to kill Homelander.

And that was the kicker.

Homelander had more than anyone in our world could ask for, and it was never enough. Butcher would constantly get chances to start-over, but continued to burn bridges in his sucidial delusion of murdering Earth's most powerful being. Two sides of the same coin, and when the game of cat-and-mouse led Homelander to figure out the thorn in his side...he let him go.

The fame and praise Homelander recieved had never been for the real him. Vought viewed the man as product to be controlled and distributed, while his Supe "teammates" in The Seven ranged from terrified to complacent. Butcher met The Homelander on even ground and spat in his face, presenting an exhillirating challenge for someone otherwise invincible.

Over the next several years, this selfish desire for adrenaline led to The Boys gaining ground against Vought. Compound V was exposed to the public, while numerous Supes were exposed for their crimes, killed, or actively turned against the company. Homelander's sqeauky-clean public image became mired in controversy, with him forced to pivot into increasingly radical nationalism. As the people turned against Homelander and Vought, so did his own mind. An already distrubed consciousness became even more twisted and outright delusional, with Homelander frequently hallucinating and coming to believe he would become God. He even turnt against his own superpowered son, Ryan, nearly beating him the boy to death.

After killing the President and injecting himself with V-One, Homelander took a seat in the Oval Office and broadcasted to the nation. Espousing himself as God and promising death to all who disagreed, he was confronted by The Boys and Ryan. Live on national television, The Homelander battled for his right to rule the planet...and lost.

No more company damage-control. No Supes sucking up to him. A son who hated every fibre of his father's being. Perhaps all of that wouldn't have mattered to Homelander...if his powers weren't taken away too. Compound V had defined Homelander's whole life, and it sowed the seeds for his own downfall.

Homelander was reduced to the child begging for his pain to stop, just like the countless victims left in his wake. And as befiting his mirror image, Butcher showed no mercy.

Homelander died as he lived: a child begging for adoration. Call it karma, a tragedy, or everything wrong with the world: John's story shows that no one can escape humanity.

Makima

I wish to use the Chainsaw Man to create a better world. Consider...death, war, hunger. There are many things in this world that would increase happiness upon removal. And I will remove them all with Chainsaw Man's power.

So the superpowered world of fantasy ended up rotten to the core like our own. But what if the monster under your bed became real instead? We have nothing to fear but fear itself; that primal urge to run which turns even the most hardened soldiers into hapless victims.

Though an enemy to us all, there will always be those who try and harness that fear into a weapon. But when enough light is cast into the darkness, we gain the courage to step forward. No matter how terrifying the Devil's visage, we can fight back. It's a comforting thought...and one that will carry you to the grave. You may slay the beast in front of you, but what about one that blends right in with humanity, raised to believe it should bend to her whims?

The situation's out of your hands, and the ensuing fear will feed her power. That's the Control Devil, more commonly known as Makima.

Like all Devils, Makima was born in Hell to embody one of humanity's fears. Makima is one of the Four Horsemen, some of the most powerful and intelligent Devils in existence. With the Weapon Devils, Makima and her "sisters" waged war against Chainsaw Man™️. This Devil had a uniquely heroic attitude, paired with an ability to devour Devils, erasing them and their concepts from time. Makima watched as things like Nazis, HIV, and humanity's sixth sense were wiped away; the Horsemen were among a handful of Devils whose memories were kept intact.

Eventually, Chainsaw Man was severely wounded and disappeared from Hell. Makima had won...and become a fan. Travelling to Earth, she demonstrated some of her power to the Japanese government: just enough to masquerade as a human. She would be taken in as head of an experimental Public Safety Devil Hunter unit: Tokyo Special Division 4. A first of its kind squad consisting of not just humans, but Devils kept on a (nominally) tight leash.

This was merely a stepping stone for Makima's new plan: gaining control of Chainsaw Man and using him to create a "perfect" world. Correctly assuming the Chainsaw Devil would try and find a human host, Makima found Denji, an impoverished 16-year old boy freshly fused with his Devil dog Pochita. The weakened Chainsaw Devil had made a contract with his owner, becoming Denji's heart so long as he lived a happy life.

Alone, confused and desperate for someone to love, Denji was putty in Makima's hands. Basic necessities were complete unknowns to him, let alone friends and romance. Grueling battles as a Devil Hunter were perfectly manageable for someone who'd sold off numerous organs just to stay alive.

Makima gave Denji everything he wanted...for a time. Denji didn't have access to the Chainsaw Devil's full power, including that existence-erasing appetite. Pochita fully taking over would require his contract with Denji be broken, and the Devil would need to be weakened once again for Makima to gain total control.

Gradually, Makima set the stage to tear out Denji's heart. Not out of malice, but simply as a means to an end. Whenever he'd deviate from desiring and obeying her, dire consequences arrived. Denji's newfound love of life was met with torturous fighting and lost loved ones, who he'd play a part in killing himself. When Denji sank low enough to enjoy being treated like one of her actual dogs, the Control Devil revealed her true colors. Seemingly killing his last friend, Power, right in front of him, she espoused that all these tragedies and her rejection were his fault. Completely shellshocked, Pochita took over Denji's body, viciously battling Makima and the Special Division, consisting of countless former adversaries. But with the public having seen Chainsaw Man be a hero, their fear lessened, giving his assailants a chance to nearly kill him.

Through the still-alive Power's sacrifice, Denji and Pochita recovered, but were forced into their Hybrid state. Makima's legion was slain, but not the Horseman herself. Ripping out Pochita's heart, their bond was severed.

Yet amidst victory and the power to reshape reality, Makima's grand goal was hardly on her mind.

All her life, she'd been forced to act as either Devil or the government's tool, weaponizing the fear she embodied. Not a unique conundrum among Devils, but most were content with either role. But few had truly human intellect, and none as isolating an ability. Makima's destiny was seemingly to strip free will from everyone who mattered in her life; cold puppets who she couldn't find any connection with.

With lofty ambitions met, the walls around Makima's heart melted. Lighting a cigarette and embracing Pochita, the Control Devil may have achieved her true dream all along: finding someone to make her a bit more human.

Unfortunately for her, karma's a bitch, and Denji took advantage of that lowered guard to chop her into pieces. Turns out, Pochita had mimicked his fusion with Denji, down to the quips of a dumb teenager. The boy and his dog may not have been the strongest or brightest, but they knew each other front-to-back.

Makima's downfall didn't really come from a chainsaw, but the humanity behind it. Despite spending so much time with Denji, the Horseman didn't consider him as anything more than a pawn. The idea that he could act out of her hands never even crossed her mind, let alone him outsmarting her.

Makima's messiah complex blinded her to truly understanding people, including herself. No matter what path she took, the human spirit was out of reach. Makima died just like her victims: betrayed by the Control Devil.

Of course, the fears Devils embody don't go away when simply killed. The Control Devil would reincarnate as Nayuta, essentially a child placed under Denji's care. In a sense, Makima finally got to experience the love she craved, more human than the Control she was chained to.

Intelligence and Experience

Homelander

(Getting more use out of this poster than the season did)

Since birth, John was raised to control his powers and be comfortable killing with them. As a mere child, Vought forced him to violently spar with Supes, undergo extensive torture to test the limits of his powers, and practically brainwashed him into an effective "hero". This would go on for 18 years, up until his debut as a hero in 1999. From there, he would be Vought's shining pillar for another 27 years.

As you should be aware by now, most of Vought's heroics are complete kayfabe. Even when faced with legitimate adversaries, they were almost never a physical threat to Homelander. But contrary to popular belief, this does not make him an incompetent fighter. Even while pulling his punches, he fought Queen Maeve, a trained hand-to-hand fighter who'd spent an additional 4 months honing her skills specifically to battle Homelander. He's taken on multiple fighters with greater knowledge at once, including millitary men, special forces, and assassins trained from birth to be expert warriors. This isn't to say Homelander is on their level of skill - far from it - but between his training and these battles, it's clear he knows how to fight.

Nonetheless, his real strengths reside with Vought's general approach: manipulation. Charisma, deception and psychological warfare were drilled into Homelander's head for decades, allowing him to effortlessly step in-and-out of that white meat babyface persona to control the populace and hinder rivals. This includes turning potential PR disasters into huge wins for Vought or himself, rolling with the punches and being flexible with tactics.

Despite Vought being exposed for blatant lies thanks to The Boys, he repeatedly won back public opinion through improvisation and controlling the narrative. Even the reveal of his romance with a Nazi and murders of innocents didn't fully curtail his popularity thanks to some quick-witted grifting. This eventually allowed him to oust the Vought leadership, get into the presidental cabinet and practically take over a country. There are certainly cracks in the clever schemes - more on those later - but regardless, there's more threat to Homelander than the Compound V in his veins.

Makima

As an embodiment of humanity's fear, the Control Devil has existed for millennia. It's unclear when it reincarnated into Makima, but it's implied to have been fairly recently given the imprint humanity and Chainsaw Man left on her. We know that Pochita's battle with the Horsemen and Weapons happened not-too-long before he met Denji, who was still a young child. Since Makima and Denji meet when he's 16, so Makima's maximum age is likely a decade old (and you thought she was the groomer).

As previously mentioned, she watched and battled Chainsaw Man in Hell, later doing so again on Earth. It's made clear she couldn't stand up to him physically, but clever strategy and cooperating (read: commanding) with other Devils led to his initial defeat. Even when "Denji" tore through her minions, she kept up with him in melee combat, if largely due to one particular ability. Makes sense, given she was known as one of the strongest Devil Hunters despite keeping her Devil nature hidden. While usually sitting behind a desk and stringing along basically everyone, it's clear Makima knows how to throw-down in a pinch.

But her real talent is in the name: control. Makima wormed her way into the Japanese government, gaining command of the fearsome Tokyo Special Divison 4. Repeatedly using her poltical leverage and powers to gain control of Devils and their Hunters, Makima effectively set up a cult of personality despite people acknowledging her mysterious motivations and somewhat alien demeanor. Even when suspicious Devil attacks placed her under scrutiny (spoiler alert: she was gulity), she wormed her way out of prosecution and got away with all Tokyo Special Divisions merging into one under her command. A handful of Devil Hunters were distrutful towards her, but most were enraptured with her charisma and...well, her looks. Pretty privilege is real folks, and it speaks to Makima's intelligence that she utilized it and other elements of human psychology to manipulate those around her despite not truly understanding them. Whether the battlefield is hellish or in the mind, the Control Devil is a fearsome opponent.

Equipment

Homelander

Compound V

Vought's perennial Supe-making drug. When injected into the bloodstream, it mutates DNA to create so-called "superpowers", with the chance of reliable and potent powers - and even developing any - heavily influenced by an individual's age. Adults may need to take the serum several times for any effect, whereas children and infants usually need just one. However, the young may develop their abilities well-after being injected (sometimes many years later); adults recieve them almost immediately.

Recieving powers can technically heal you, but to be blunt, Compound V is a complete crapshoot. Adults are just as likely to turn into freaks or instantly explode then recieve anything useful. The young aren't safe from these horrors, and even controllable powers may first activate spontaneously, often to lethal results for them or others.

Having recieved Compound V as a fetus, Homelander became the most powerful Supe in history, even surpassing those with...

V-One

Frederick Vought's original serum. Ten times more potent than Compound V (See Before the Verdict), it almost always kills whoever's injected with it, but does grant immortality to those who survive: specifically, the inability to age. Upon learning of that second property, Homelander sought it out to complete his "ascension" to godhood, eventually recieving it from his father, Soldier Boy. Both it and Compound V reside in Homelander's veins, acting as the source for his powers.

Makima

Devil Hunter Suit

Aside from the stylish trenchoat, Makima's uniform is a standard-issue Devil Hunter outfit. Built to withstand attacks from Devils, it's uncannily durable and essentially fireproof. That durability helps Devil Hunters battle their superhuman opponents, though given Makima herself is an extremely powerful Devil, she essentially wears it just to blend in.

Powers and Abilities

Homelander

Supe Physiology

Despite the powers of Supes drastically varying, they do share a few common traits. These mainly relate to the aforementioned traits of Compound V and V-One, but also manifest in enhanced hearing. This manifests as being exceptionally vulnerable to high-pitched frequencies...and that's about it. Pretty raw deal.

Additionally, Supes are noted as having unlimited potential; physical and mental pressure can continously push the boundaries of their abilities. This is likely why some Supes still bother training and make clear improvements to their powers. Queen Maeve went from being helpless against Homelander to fighting him, even impaling his ear with a metal rod. Likewise, exposure to radiation made Soldier Boy and Kimiko intensely radioactive, which could be weaponized as a nuclear blast. Kimiko in particular went from being sliced in half by Homelander to merely being thrown back by him.

Though not confirmed, Homelander seems to have shown this himself. Intially held down by the grip of three Supes and nearly depowered, his rage appeared to boost his strength, allowing him to easily throw the trio off.

Lastly, the pseudo-healing Compound V provides manifests as accelerated healing for all Supes, though the exact speed varies dramatically. In Homelander's case, he healed from that aforementioned ear stab in at most a day, and from severe uranium burns in just a few hours.

Immortality

As previously discussed, Homelander cannot die of old age.

Superhuman Physicality

Many Supes posssess superhuman strength, speed, and endurance, with Homelander being the most powerful and resilient among them. As just a child, he withstood being placed in a room-sized hot enough to disintegrate normal people in seconds. He can survive in the vaccum of space, and biological agents like anthrax can't hurt him. One of the only viable methods to kill Homelander was an artifical virus, which would have killed all Supes across the world. Even then, a standard sample would not have been enough to kill Homelander. V-One heightened his resistance to the point where it couldn't kill him at all, albeit through specific changes to his genes rather than a blanket "disease resistance". Even possessing a foreign body with your own conscioussness is impossible for those normally capable of doing so.

In addition, most of Homelander's senses are beyond any normal person's. He can distinguish individuals by mere scent, even from a single drop of sweat. His range of hearing nearly reaches 200,000 hZ, about 10x greater than the norm. This makes precisely reading a person's heartbeat and blood pressure a breeze. It's worth noting that Homelander doesn't seem more debilitated by loud noises than a normal person.

John's sight was also enhanced, but in a different way:

X-Ray Vision

When he wishes, Homelander can view the world via X-rays. A form of electromagnetic radiation, these go through almost all solid objects, letting Homelander see through walls, skin, flesh, etc. The only exception is zinc, via some physics mumbo-jumbo that I thankfully don't have to explain today.

Flight

Another comparatively simple power to go over, but no less useful. Homelander can fly at the drop of a hat, whether to lord over humanity from above, quickly get from place-to-place, or just bum-rush somebody.

Heat Vision

(Probably should've had these in the opposite order)

Homelander's signature and most lethal ability. His eyes can fire energy beams of high concentration and energy, packing immense force and heat. This usually allows them to slice or melt through whatever they hit, including metal. They've even burnt the skin of Soldier Boy, which could withstand oxy-acetylene flames, which reach about 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit. Over the years, Homelander's precision with the move greatly increased. He can hit an open milk (of the human variety) bottle with continous exposure, yet only to warm it up a bit. Alternatively, he can allow an explosive burst of energy to send a target flying. This seems to naturally happen against those who can withstand the heat of the attack.

Makima

Horseman Physiology

Like all Devils, Makima draws power from fear of the concept she embodies, that being 'control'. The more feared she is, the greater her abilities become, and vice-versa. This fluctuation in power can be drastic mid-fight, albeit usually when multiple people experience a similar emotion. Makima's relationship to 'control' also means the Control Devil can't truly die unless erased from history. However, this is through a cycle of reincarnation after death; a conventionally lethal wound will still kill a Devil's specific incarnation like any ordinary person. Dying also removes any lasting manifestations of their power, at least in most cases.

The other main resource Devils draw from is blood. Aside from being their main source of nutrition, absorbing the blood of others (which can be done through skin contact alone) grants impressive regeneration and removes fatigue. Just enough blood to fill a small cup regrew the building-sized Bat Devil's massive arm, and this was while he was notably malnourished. Consuming blood from stronger Devils can dramatically boost one's power and skills.

All Devils possess smell superior to any person, letting them distinguish the scents of humans, Devils, and Hybrids. Makima demonstrated this by smelling both Denji's body and Pochita's heart inside it. Denji surmises that she actually "sees" through scent, but this is contradicted by a variety of scenes (like her bothering to turn around when he landed the final blow). She also detected Pochita's Contract with Denji and his actions in space through unknown means.

Lastly, Devils can possess non-Devil corpses to become Fiends, supplanting part of the deceased's brain to create a unique head shape. Unless most of the brain remains, the resultant Fiend's personality and memories will almost entirely consist of the original Devil's. In cases where most of the head is intact, both personalities will intermingle, with the host's taking precedence. If the brain is evenly split, each personality exists as a seperate consciousness, though only the Devil's can take control at any given. time. This procedure is a last resort, both for the change in consciousness and weakened state it leaves a Devil in. However, some Fiends can briefly take their original Devil forms.

What sets the Horsemen apart from most Devils is exceptional power and the ability to remember those erased by Chainsaw Man. This recollection isn't perfect - Makima began to forget the names of each concept after a while - but still quite the luxury given Pochita the slasher villain to Devils.

Devil Contracts

All Devils can offer classic Faustian bargains to humans: give something you own (legally, for some reason), and the Devil gives you power. This comes in the form of specific abilities, turning the user into a Devil or Hybrid, and summoning the Devil (or parts of it) in-question. Each party is bound by penalty of death to upholding the Contract. The agreement must be verbal or agreed upon in a shared mental space. This occasional telepathy extends to when the Contract is completed; the human and Devil can freely communicate in this manner.

Shapeshifting and Biological Manipulation/Creation

Apparently being The Control Devil lets you turn into a whole bunch of rats and...talk through them? When emerging from the horde, a few still remained falling down, so it's possible she creates some herself.

Telekinesis

(Why would she do this other than for the TikTok edits?)

Perhaps a manifestation of control, Makima's thoughts can force movement all by themselves. Aside from the body horror shown above, she's caused intense internal bleeding from the eyes, nose and mouth, levitated herself and others a few feet off the ground. But these are a side hustle compared to...

"Bang"

Makima's go-to for murder. Pointing at something, she projects an invisible force which punches through them, with the size varying from a small hole to the crater you see above. It appears that she has to actually say the words "Bang" for any projection, though this isn't confirmed.

Control

Makima's go-to for...well, control. The Control Devil can dominate the minds of any being viewed as inferior to itself; with only a few exceptions, this is basically everyone for Makima. Aside from manipulating their thoughts, she can alter senses, remove and change memories, or rewrite entire personalities. Makima also maintains a telepathic link with her controlees, allowing her to percieve through their senses and maintain conversation. This all works across the dimensional gap of the universe and Hell, even on dead bodies (somehow).

As seen above, The Control Devil can spawn intangible chains to create and maintain control. These are hardly required though, as we've seen her just as easily activate the ability without chains. Their main purpose seems to be for keeping track of her subjects and more easily moving them.

Control's exact limitations are...a bit tricky to figure out. The Angel Devil and Blood Devil managed to break free via an influx of strong emotions, but only via very specific stimuli prompting a flood of memories. However, Makima does need to give specific commands for control to be fully established. Depending on her order, the victim can maintain a great deal of autonomy. This shouldn't be the case for corpses because...well, they weren't thinking before anyway.

Death Ritual

Via sacrificing the lives of convicts at a shrine of high altitude, Makima can twist her hands to contort and crush her targets into mere blood splatters. This takes several seconds after an inmate says a person's name.

Damage Transferral & Resurrection

By controlling the Prime Minister of Japan (presumably Ryutaro Hashimoto), Makima forced him into a Devil Contract. Any physical debilitation Makima recieves will be redirected to one of Japan's citizens. In our world's 1997 - the year of Makima's final battle - Japan had roughly 126 million people.*

Though the Contract doesn't prevent a wound from happening in the first place, it will be transferred to some poor schmuck in a few moments from her perspective (but essentially instantly if Makima is controlling them with a chain). This has allowed Makima to survive being riddled with bullets (including a bullet to the head), losing limbs, dozens of impalements in quick succession, bisection, and even decapitation. Makima can also determine when the Contract takes effect to stay dead for longer and plan a surprise attack. Not usually necessary, but great for trolling people.

Denji theorized that the wound must be percieved as an attack - either by the Contract or adversary - to be transferred, which let him eat her as an act of love. Kishibe speculates this to be the case, but only if Makima was still alive to begin with after being cooked into food. Considering they were just trying to be cautious, it's questionable whether this weakness truly exists.

What we do know is that more severe and continuous damage takes longer to heal. Bisection briefly forced Makima to stop fighting the Chainsaw Devil while waiting for recovery. Power's blood chainsaw "running amok" inside her left her vulnerable to being chopped into pieces. Getting diced up may have been enough to kill her in the first place, and the same goes for being cooked into food. If she was alive then, her Contract didn't take effect for at least a few hours (it was day when Denji defeated Makima, and night when he ate her). Obviously, getting eaten fully assured she was dead.

*Chainsaw Man's almost certainly has less people than our own given the Devils running around, and this isn't accounting for unregistered citizens (which a Contract would exclude). Estimates for the total population generally vary from ~126.011 million to 126.276 million.

Support

Homelander

None

He burnt literally every bridge in his life, what'd you expect?

Makima

Having merged the Tokyo Special Divisions into one, Makima garnered political and supernatural control over their staff. It doesn't seem like she bothered controlling everyone given not all the organization's employees were present in her climatic battle with Chainsaw Man, so I'll only be including those who were directly shown as in her roster (read: slavery).

 John Devil Hunters

23 Devil Hunters. They presumably have Devil Contracts, but nearly all their capabilities are unknown. Likely not too relevant for a fight given none were used against Chainsaw Man. Still, they provide numbers and wear those resilient Devil Hunter uniforms.

The exception is that two unnamed Devil Hunters can summon the Mantis Devil's forelimb, which is similar to a lampost in height.

Akane Sawatari

A former civillian Devil Hunter who allied herself with the Gun Devil (who was actually Makima LARPing). The Ghost Devil deemed her scary, but aside from that, not much is known about her. The exception is her Contract with the...

Snake Devil

By sacrificing a fingernail and performing one of 3 commands, Akane can call upon the fearsome Snake Devil. Per the Contract, Snake will kill Akane if she's captured, though it's possible Makima could step-in to prevent this. The commands are as follows:
  • "Tail": Launches the beast's massive tail towards an opponent.
  • "Swallow it whole": The Snake Devil rips through an opponent, absorbing most of their body.
  • "Spit it out": A consumed being is summoned, now beholdent to Akane's will.

Yutaro Kurose & Michiko Tendo

Two Devil Hunters who entered a shared Contract to summon the...

Punishment Devil

Not much to say about this one other than the picture...which also has the Snake Devil. Looks dope though!

The Gun Fiend

The immensely powerful Gun Devil possessing Aki Hayakawa, Makima's most loyal Devil Hunter. Loyalty doesn't get you far in life, nor does trying to kill the Devil which murdered your family...that is now in-charge of your body and trying to kill your friends. Talk about a rough deal.

Aside from the giant pistol sticking out of his head, Aki can turn his limbs into high-powered M16 assault rifles, which shoot supernaturally fast and powerful bullets. This let him put up a solid fight against a Hybrid Denji, though the latter wasn't giving it his all (having your best friend become a monster would do that). Granted, Aki wasn't in top f

Galgali, the Violence Fiend

Implied to be the deceased Devil Hunter Hirokazu Arai, this Devil's host brain is largely intact, ensuring he loves peace and seeing others smile...with his poison-dispensing mask on. Remove that, and he becomes a hulked-out berserker with extra eyes (but no pupils) with an extra arm able to grow out of his mouth (ew).

Beam, the Shark Fiend and Devil

A Chainsaw Man fanboy and hungry for violence, Beam has razor-sharp fangs and can transform his head into a multi-eyed shark's. His most unique ability is "swimming" through any surface via intangibility, as seen above. Transforming into the Shark Devil turns him into a medium-sized shark with four spindly legs.

Zombie Devil

He does what you'd expect: turn corpses and people into zombies with physical infection, with the proxies capable of doing the same. Under Makima's control, there were 23 zombies.

Princi, the Spider Devil

With blade-like legs letting her wall-crawl and inhuman pain tolerance, this Devil is certainly deadly. Even so, Makima finds more use with her being able to phase through the ground and open her body up like a zipper. Going inside the open body leads you to Hell.

"Angel", the...Angel Devil

The embodiment of humanity's angel fear is deceptively deadly despite his usual laziness. Just a few seconds of exposure to his touch will drain 2 months of your lifespan. Clothing blocks the effect, but that's little room for comfort given each year of life he absorbs acts as fuel for a weapon. He's got at least 1,117 years to work with, and the more funneled into a weapon, the stronger it becomes. Some also have unique abilities, like harming intangible beings. All come from his halo.
  • Spears - They sure are spears alright, presumably with minimal investment.
  • Usage: Five Years - A sword that is implied to instantly siphon the entire lifespan of those it hits, all without leaving external wounds.
  • Usage: Ten Years - Another sword. We don't know what it does since Makima controlled him before he swung it at her. Odds are it siphons life like his other sword.
  • Usage: One Hundred Years - A massive cleaver...that also didn't get used.
  • Usage: One Thousand Years - This large spear came through a portal accompanied by three golden effigies; the gateway seemingly led into space. It was powerful enough to pierce the Chainsaw Devil and would have killed him; do note this was while Pochita was severely weakened from being viewed as a hero in Japan.

(He also wears a Devil Hunter suit :)

Tokyo Special Division 5

With herself at the helm, Makima partners up with her old allies: the Weapon Devils. But this time, they're fused with humans as Hybrids. Makima's put them in Devil Hunter suits and made them absolutely smitten with her; she's a freak like that.

By activating some sort of physical trigger attached to their human selves, Hybrids transform into Devils. Unlike Fiends, the Devil's concisousness can't control the body. In-exchange for being far weaker than their natural Devil selves, Hybrids posssess bolstered healing through blood. By pulling their trigger, Hybrids can recover from just a severed head and other events that would be guranteed death for an ordinary person. Their powers are also hard to copy via supernatural means, and the same goes for trying to read their minds or erase their concepts from existence. Not considered alive in the traditional sense, certain abilities that manipulate organic compounds don't affect them either.

Whip Hybrid

A girl whose human name is unknown. A snap of her fingers lets her transform into Whip Woman, who has about 16 whip-like tendrils comprising her hands.

Spear Hybrid

A man whose human name is unknown. By pulling a spear out of his neck, he becomes Spear Man. As you'd expect, he can create and throw spears, seemingly just one at a time.

Miri Sugo, the Longsword Hybrid

Ripping off his own right hand allows him to become Longsword Man, gaining swords sticking out of his arms and the back of his head.

Samurai Sword, the Katana Hybrid

The son of Denji's yakuza boss who already wanted revenge on Chainsaw Man, so probably the only guy who'd join this team willingly. He removes his left hand to become Katana Man, gaining a katana in each arm and sticking through his head. Not two though, so he got dealt a bad hand.

Aside from carrying around a holstered pistol, the main thing to note for him is that he can crouch down to the ground, then burst forward about a dozen feet. The increase in velocity renders him basically invisible to enemies while performing this charge.

Barem Bridge, the Flamethrower Hybrid

(This dude has no good images, which is what he deserves)

By clicking his thumb and top set of teeth, Barem Bridge becomes Flamethrower Man. Gaining flamethrowers for arms and a head, he can unleash bursts of flame akin to small houses in size.

Reze, the Bomb Hybrid

"Well, I think she'd be bored on a date with a man. Right, Ms. Makima?!"
(She gets a quote because she's a blog alumni)

An assassin for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Reze was trained from birth to be a killer. She tried and nearly succeeded in stealing Denji's heart - literally and figuratively - but was ultimately defeated. Still, he gave her a chance to run away with him. Makima made sure to put a stop to that before she got the chance.

Pulling the pin on her neck leads to an explosive transformation into Bomb Girl, granting her a bomb-head (which you should probably expect by now...or the picture I showed). As you'd probably guess, the Bomb Devil lets Reze generate explosions that normally reach up to a few dozen feet. Using her own body to create them grants additional power, enough to engulf the inside of a two-story building. Turning her leg into a fleshy torpedo created a blast several times larger. Reze's explosions can propel her through the air, and when decapitated, her body can still act autonomously.

Quanxi, the Bow Hybrid

Known as the first human Devil Hunter, Quanxi is easily the most lethal among Special Divison 5...obviously excluding Makima, of course. Still, she's said to come in first place if humanity had a bare-knuckle tournament (no, VSBW, this does not make her a Genius fighter, just very impressive physically).

Carrying 3 katanas at all times (and showing up Katana Man in the proccess), pulling an arrow out of her right eye socket lets Quanxi become Bow Girl. Her hands transform into crossbows, while much of her head becomes arrows; 3 can be fired from each limb at once.
